Alliander

Platform for trading solar energy between individuals, companies and small energy producers

Up2 TechnologyAlliander

About this project

As an innovative energy company Alliander stimulates the use of solar energy by small companies and private individuals. Normally unused energy is released to the grid of the energy company at a standard price per Kwh.

Alliander wanted to learn, if it is feasible to allow small companies and individuals to trade their energy with others and to determine themselves what to do with the generated but unused energy capacity.

A pilot was started to set-up an energy trading platform. The platform provides real-time information on someone’s energy production and unused capacity (integration with smart-meters). Platform members can decide to trade extra capacity with other members on the platform.

Our role

Up2 won the contest to build the platform. We were the right party to do the job because of our profound knowledge on system and Internet of Things integration and because of our reputation with rapid software development.

Up2 designed and built the platform. We built the real-time interfaces with smart energy meters and with the back-offices from cooperating energy companies in order to process the trade results on the invoices of the platform members.

The result

The trading platform was released after just 7 weeks! 200 individuals and small companies participated in the pilot. They recorded additional profits of trading solar energy on their energy bill.
